An effect is like a submaster. It is added into the total output.

You can have separate control of the color coming from a cue or a submaster that is independent of the effect. Or, for channel based effects, you can add the appropriate subchannels into the effect. This would allow you to set the color for each step of the effect.

For preset based effects, each step is a separate cue or submaster so the colors recorded are played for each step. (For channels that are marked in the cue/submaster.)

If you want to set the color for a particular step of a channel, set the channel how you want it in Live mode, then:

Select the channel by clicking on it in the main display or type the channel number in the command line. Choose Channel->Copy Level(s) from Channel. If the channel has colors you'll need to select which parameters to copy.

Switch to the Effect Window. Assuming you are editing the effect, select the channel line in the editing table (not any subchannel under the channel but, the main channel number which does not have to be the same as the channel you copied. Then from the popup, select Paste Level(s) for Step. Answer which step you want to set and you should see all of the subchannels you selected in the copy appear under the selected channel in the channel based effect table.
