when i used to give a certain lamp a gel colour it used to be filled in that colour...In the lates version i cannot fill eg Pars or Profiles at all...
What am i missing?

In the Automatic tab of the preferences there is a setting called "Set symbol fill color automatically using library". Make sure that this is selected.
The other reason much less common reason that the color might not fill is if you are using a custom symbol that does not allow the group to set the fill color property. This would be set using the Format->Transform->Group can set drawing properties... to allow the fill color to be set prior to the graphic(s) being converted to a symbol.
